Documentary on Proposition 8 to Premieres on HBO

The long-awaited documentary on the historic case challenging California’s Proposition 8, The Case Against 8, premiered on HBO yesterday.

In 2008, California voters passed Proposition 8, repealing the rights of same-sex couples to marry in the state. The following year, after the California Supreme Court determined that the adoption of Proposition 8 did not itself violate the California Constitution, two plaintiff couples – Kris Perry and Sandy Stier and Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo – filed suit against the State of California in federal court, represented by the unlikely team of attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies and supported by the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), an organization co-founded by HRC President Chad Griffin.

For five years, filmmakers Ben Cotner and Ryan White, with unparalleled access to the key players in the case, covered the trial as it climbed to the Supreme Court.  The resulting documentary is a powerful, behind-the-scenes look at the team that helped to bring marriage equality back to California.
